How to Make Colored Sugar

Today I’m going to show you how to make your own colored sugar. You can buy it at the grocery store or make it yourself and save a lot of money over the holiday season. With colored sugar you can add an extra sparkle to baked treats and make them even more special.

To make the colored sugar we’ll need:

  • granulated sugar
  • gel food coloring
  • resealable plastic bags

You can also use raw sugar or Caster sugar depending on the size of sugar granules you want to use.

Making colored sugar is a very easy and simple process. Add half a cup of sugar to a plastic bag and 1-2 drops of gel food coloring. Seal the bag, taking out any extra air, and mix the sugar around until the color has spread evenly. It only takes a couple of minutes. Depends on how dark or light you want the color to be, add more or less food coloring.

You can make any color you want using this process, that way you can decorate your cookies, cupcakes, and more and that is how you can save a lot of money by using simple ingredients and making colored sugar at home.

Notes:

If you use water-based food coloring, you sugar may turn out a little bit wet. If that happens, just place the colored sugar on a baking sheet covered with parchment paper and let it dry out or you can pop it in the oven at 150 F degrease for 5-10 minutes, kipping the eye on it.
